The performative sound installation developed by tamtam (Sam Auinger/Hannes Strobl) in collaboration with radio aporee (Udo Noll) artistically explores the auditory legibility of Berlin: the voices, signal languages, pulses, rhythms and timbres that sonically characterize everyday life in the city.
For the sound installation, sounds from various urban districts will be streamed in real time into the Aufbau Haus commercial courtyard, where they will be mixed live with sound structures generated on site – both instrumentally and synthetically.
For this purpose, four mobilemics developed by Udo Noll are on the road in Berlin on the day of the performance according to a precise location and time schedule. They send original sounds from various locations to the inner courtyard of the Aufbau Haus. There, this sound material will be rearranged again and again using mobile loudspeakers.
The courtyard, which covers about 2000 square meters, is enclosed by several floors and can be accessed on several levels. A passageway and an access road connect it with the busy Oranienstraße. Thus, the architectural ensemble creates a visually screened place on the one hand and an acoustic connection to the surrounding city on the other. Overall, this addresses both the sonority of the found architecture and the musicality of Berlin.
By superimposing sounds from various Berlin locations in the courtyard of the Aufbau Haus, the sound installation „sounding berlin“ plays with the spatial and temporal empfindences of the visitors.
